Timed to coincide with the DVD release of the narrative biopic "42," Major League Baseball Productions is also offering a short documentary about Jackie Robinson entitled "Letters From Jackie: The Private Thoughts of Jackie Robinson." While clearly a trailblazer within the arena of baseball, Robinson became a unique figurehead for equal rights and racial tolerance and equality. I'm not sure that Robinson, left to his own devices, would have seen himself as such an important man. But he understood his role as it came to be defined. And instead of keeping his head down and playing ball, he embraced the impact he was having on the greater picture. Clocking in at less than 50 minutes, this illuminating portrait discusses Robinson as both a baseball legend and a civil rights activist. It does so, however, through the correspondence of Robinson who actively wrote to fans, friends, and even the President. To hear his thoughts, in his own words, makes for a pretty stirring...
